Welcome!

This project will restore an original Mercury capsule mock-up built by McDonnell Aircraft (now Boeing) in 1962 for educational outreach. One of three capsules, this one was specifically constructed to tour the nation in the summer of 1962 as part of the U.S. Department of Treasury Freedom Bond campaign.

The idea was to educate the public on how we planned to get off the planet and embark on the exciting Age of Space by investing in U.S. Savings Bonds. This capsule was further displayed at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair.

With your help we will restore this capsule to its glory and take it on the road again, this time to schools, colleges and other centers of learning.

Our Four Phase Restoration Plan

01

Instrument Panel Rebuild

The first objective is to rebuild the instrument panel. The LEDs will interface with a software program which replicates portions of John Glenn's Friendship 7 mission.

02

Interactive Flight Sequence

Next with the control panel we will build and synch an interactive flight sequence from liftoff to splashdown. Every indicator on the panel will duplicate what John Glenn saw as he circled the globe at more than 17,000 miles per hour with the hopes and dreams of the nation riding on his shoulders.

03

Working Instrumentation

In the third phase we will introduce working instrumentation in all the gauges so they mimic the actual flight in geo-location, air speed and altitude.

04

Mobile Education Unit

And finally of course we will mount the restored operational capsule on a trailer and hit the road bringing this historic part of the space program to you.

Our Mission

Through this effort we hope to motivate our youth to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math with the goal of inspiring children to reach for the stars in all they do!

All of this takes resources and that's why we are asking for your help. Your financial support will restore this vital tool for learning and preserve the legacy of the pioneering men and women who launched us on the greatest adventure of mankind.
